3rd January 2019 - Happy New year everybody. Over the last month we popped into the Acorns Children's Hospice in Selly Oak Birmingham to present the cheque for £1425 that we raised at the gig with Dandy in November. Together with Graham Onions who helped organise the evening, we had a look round this wonderful place and saw some of the things that donations go to support. Amazing care for children and their families at difficult times. Thanks to Dee and Toby for the tour. There was a nice write up in the Bromsgrove Advertiser about the presentation too!
So on to 2019 - no more gigs at the moment but if there are any of the old folk clubs that we used to play still around and are looking for a cheap act - we are your men!!
One of the great things about the past year was the good friends, musicians, organisers and folk club go-ers that we reconnected with after being away from the scene for so long. It was reassuring to know that nothing much had changed - including our set!! Nice to meet you all again and to share many memories.
3rd December 2018 - Many thanks to everybody who came to the Charity Concert in aid of Acorns Children's Hospice last week. With the tickets and the raffle we raised £1425 which is a tremendous effort. Special thanks go to our co-stars DANDY and to Guy for the transport, Graham for the assistance in organising the evening, Martin for the raffle and to Stirchley United WMC for the free use of their fabulous venue. This brings to an end our comeback year!! Who knows what 2019 will bring.
21st November 2018 - Such sad news this week. We heard that the great Bill Caddick has passed away. Bill was a guest at The Princes Corner (I still have the recording of the night) but more than that he was a favourite of mine. I was only discussing him a couple of weeks ago with Norman Wheatley. I also loved his work with Home Service and with the National Theatre productions. He will be sadly missed and our condolences go out to Bill's family. His music lives on.
16th November 2018 - We had a great night at The Red Lion folk club in Kings Heath Birmingham this week. Excellent turn out and a good time was had by all. Some excellent singing from the audience!! Over our career we have played at this venue several times but believe it or not never as the main guests!! Persistence paid off!! Thanks to all for an enjoyable night and thanks to Chris for the P.A work.
16th November 2018 - Tickets going rapidly for the charity gig in a couple of weeks time. Looking forward to teaming up with our old pals Dandy again for the first time in 15 years! To reserve a ticket drop us a message through the Contact Us section of the web site and we will put it on the door for you. £10 a ticket - good cause!!
11th November 2018 - Thank you for all the kind comments about the film that I posted using our version of The Green Fields of France and incorporating photos that I have taken in and around Ypres and The Somme over the last few years. It was viewed over 1000 times. We will remember them.
9th November 2018 - Had a message from an old friend of ours, Slawko Baran. Slawko or Slav Baran as he is known has an show on Flylde Coast Radio which is an Internet based radio station up near Blackpool. Slav played The Green Fields of France on his show this week (7.00pm Fridays) and gave us a mention which was good of him. Slav's claim to fame although he didn't mention it on the show is that he played the drum on the recording!! You can tune in to the station on www.fyldecoastradio.org . Nice to hear from you Slawko.
16th October 2018 - Tickets are going well for the charity gig with ourselves and Dandy. If you need further info about the gig there is a special page on our web site with all the information. You can reserve tickets by contacting us through the web site or from the Acorns office in Selly Oak or the Stirchley United WMC itself.
Don't forget we are the main guests at The Red Lion Folk Club in Kings Heath on Wed 14th November.
12th September 2018 - We have finalised details of the charity concert we will be doing to raise funds for The Acorns Children's Hospice in Birmingham. It will be on Thursday November 29th 2018 at Stirchley United wmc starting at 8.00pm. Tickets will be £10 - see the special page Acorns Concert page for full details of the gig and how to get tickets. Only 150 available so snap them up quickly!!!
22nd August 2018 - Delighted to announce a couple more gigs for the future. Firstly, on Wednesday 14th November we will be the guests at The Red Lion Folk Club in Kings Heath Birmingham. We did a short four song set at their Christmas party with Mad Jocks and Englishmen in December but we will be back for a full guest spot on this date. Looking forward to that one.
Secondly, we have almost finalised the details for our Charity gig for Acorns Hospice now. The reason we actually got back to playing last year was to prepare for a long awaited follow up to the Crescent Theatre charity concerts that we did in the 1990s. It's taken a while but we are close to confirming that we shall be performing at The Stirchley Social Club on Thursday Nov 29th and will have as our special guest our old friends Dandy. Full details when we have finalised the arrangements.
11th August 2018 - Had to mention this!! A friend of ours pointed out to us that a signed version (only by me) of The Pub Song single is currently on sale on Gumtree for £60. It was signed to Elaine!! Can't remember who the Elaine was but worth £60 of anybody's money. Any further takers at that price - I have a few copies left!! It seems it's also on eBay at a much more reasonable price of £7.99! On the subject of The Pub Song did you know it features in the list of 150 songs representing music in Birmingham as nominated by the public alongside Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath - think I'm kidding? Have a look! https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/whats-on/music-nightlife-news/b-side-brum---what-long-7438022
10th August 2018 - Fantastic night at The Bromsgrove Folk Club last night. Great crowd and many old friends present. Thanks for the booking Bob.
17th June 2018 - We had a smashing night at the Summer Showcase at Bromsgrove Folk Club last week. Along with John Mosedale, Steve and Julie Wigley and The Townmen of Bremen we played to a great audience who didn't disapprove too much when we told them we would be back for a full guest spot on Thursday 9th August 2018. Thanks to all who helped provide a great nights entertainment and we hope to see plenty of old friends when we hit the club again in August.
3rd February 2018 - Thanks to Martin Bond for inviting us to his 61st Birthday party - We played a little spot of recognisable tunes and the audience and ourselves had a lovely time!! Happy Birthday Martin.
31st December 2017 - Happy New Year to everybody - hope to see you out in the clubs in 2018.
21st December 2017 - Had a fantastic night with Mad Jocks and Englishmen at their Christmas party at The Red Lion in King's Heath. There was a lovely audience and many people came over to have a chat saying that they last saw us 30 or 40 years ago. Memories of The Loony Bin Folk Club, The Bell and Pump and The Europa Lodge of all places!! Mad Jocks were in great form and the pantomime was...well, not a family affair shall we say. Great fun.
3rd December 2017 - Well done to everybody who came along to the gig at the Bull's Head last week - we raised £277 for the Acorns Children's Hospice on the raffle and the collection - terrific effort. Hopefully a suitable venue can soon be found for an official charity concert for the hospice in 2018. Will let you all know as soon as one is fixed up. Thanks.
23rd November 2017 - A huge Thank You to all our friends and family that came out last night to our "reheasal in front of an audience" at The Bull's Head. It was a great night rolling back the years although it might take a bit longer to recover from it than it used to! Don't think Chris will be having a conversation with anybody for a day or two! Special thanks go to our old friend Norman Wheatley who did a spot for us and to the new generation, Tom McCann and Michael Jones who played superb sets. Also great to see Alan and Glynn otherwise known as Dandy and George from Mad Jocks who we have shared a stage with many times over the last 41 years!!
Looking forward to playing a few public gigs soon and to putting on a big show for The Acorns Childrens Hospice in the new year. Watch out for info on that when we have it. Cheers
4th November 2017 - With Remembrance Day approaching for 2017, a video is available on our Facebook and You Tube sites that features our recording of The Green Fields of France and photos that I have taken over in France and Belgium. Feel free to share the video.
7th October 2017 - I've recently discovered that Norman Wheatley is still broadcasting his Gentlefolk show now as a webcast on the Gentlefolk2 web site. It's been going for 4 years so I've obviously not been paying attention. Norman presented Gentlefolk on Radio Birmingham in the late 70s and invited us to record half a dozen songs at Pebble Mill for broadcast on the show - our first venture into a studio - and also presented Gentlefolk's third anniversary show at our club at The Bull's Head in Kings Norton. Recordings from these shows are available on our Songs page - we were very young in those days!! Great to hear Norman back on the airways - his voice hasn't changed. Have a listen to his shows - some great music.
25th September 2017 - We have been persuaded to come out of retirement and help put on a show to raise money for the children's hospice along the lines of the shows at the Crescent Theatre in the 90s. We are busy trying to remember the songs and how to play them!! To help us remember I've been looking back at the Crescent shows and have revisited the video of the show. The songs from the 1995 show are now on the web site and on our Youtube channel. Why not have a look!
15th August 2017 - Finally upgraded the web site so it contains all of our songs in mp3 format. They are available from the Media and Songs link at the top of the pages. Our My Space site is being scrapped as it is so unreliable!! Apologies to anybody who uses it. All the material is available either here or on You Tube. Ta!
9th June 2017 - Have heard the sad news this week of the death of Vin Garbutt. We supported Vin at many gigs and always had a great night. He was a very talented and funny performer and his songs always made you stop and think. He was a lovely man to work with and will be sadly missed. Our versions of Absent Friends and Man of the Earth were both learned from Vin. Our thoughts are with his family.
